Fencer in Palm Bay.

The eastern seafront estate at the Cliftonville-Kingsgate boundary. Wider gardens, chalk-cliff exposure, wind-driven rain. Substantial closeboard runs on concrete posts are the norm.

Palm Bay sits above the chalk cliffs at the eastern edge of Margate, running towards Kingsgate and Botany Bay. The estate has a mix of 1960s-70s bungalows and later infill, with generally larger gardens than Cliftonville proper. Salt exposure is at its worst here - the full north-easterly comes over the cliff edge unbroken.

Post-hole conditions are the standing gotcha on Palm Bay. Chalk substrate hits at 400-500mm on some plots. That is good for post bearing once you are through the topsoil but changes the dig - you cannot get a spec-sheet 800mm depth without pack. The workaround is honest: dig to firm bearing (which may be shallower than a specifier would call for), pack the concrete collar wider than standard, and let the collar do the load-bearing.

Fence height on the rear boundaries here is often the full permitted-development 2m to give the north wind something to break against rather than sweep past the low fence into the house. Not a small consideration on the exposed plots.

Palm Bay is not a conservation area. Standard permitted-development rules apply.
